Sith Lords and Bass

Star Wars Episode 7 is rapidly approaching, planning to be released sometime in 2015, and the amount of drama and news continues to build. A new Millennium Falcon video has revealed the use of the ‘Bat Mobile’ as part of the ship. Uhm ok? Another hot topic has been the complicated history between Harrison Ford and his character Han Solo. Ford has always been quick to recognize his roles as Indiana Jones and other characters but has always had some hesitancy when discussing Han Solo. In a 2010 interview, Ford was even quoted as saying “I’m done with him,” in reference to the iconic character. Despite all this, Ford has re-accepted the role and will be in the new movie. Two weeks ago, Ford broke his leg during shooting. Has all this Han Solo bashing finally caught up to him? Is there a Sith Lord curse? Whatever the reason we wish him a speedy recovery.

Albino Cobra and Headphones

Back to School

Back to school time can be exciting, terrifying and/or sad occasion for a variety of different people. Parents are excited to send their kids back to school to enhance their learning experience. That feeling coincides with the fact that their children will now be tired after a long day of learning instead of bouncing off the walls on summer vacation. We all know why we celebrate graduations and what a great achievement and honor it is, but most of us do not know how and where Father’s Day started. Father’s Day was officially inaugurated in the United States in the early 20^th Century and was seen as a complement to Mother’s Day. Father’s Day was founded in Spokane, Washington by Sonora Smart Dodd in 1910. Dodd’s father, William Jackson Smart, was a Civil War Veteran and a single father of 6. Dodd approached her pastor with the idea after listening to a sermon about Mother’s Day. She originally wanted to celebrate Father’s Day on her Father’s actual birthday but was unable to rush the process and the party agreed to make it the third Sunday of June. Dodd had little success with the holiday, eventually forgetting it completely when she went away to the Art Institute in Chicago. In the 1930s she returned to Spokane and that is when she began to pick up steam.

With the help of trade groups looking to benefit from the holiday, Sonora Dodd was able to gain some national traction for promoting the holiday. Manufacturers of ties, tobacco pipes, and other traditional presents were crucial in getting Father’s Day the notoriety it has today. At first Americans resisted the holiday because they felt that people were just trying to replicate the commercial success of Mother’s Day, but the trade groups would not give up. By the mid-1980s it was written that, ”Father’s Day has become a second Christmas for all the men’s gift-oriented industries.”
